One Perfect Week in Ireland...Day 7
You're not going to want to leave Killarney, and I totally get you, but I promise the next couple days are really lovely as well.
Day 7 is your 2nd to last day in Ireland (yeah ok, its eight perfect days, not a perfect week) and there is quite a bit of driving, so maybe keep the whiskey consumption to a minimum. We spent the entire day on the road to Galway, exploring parts of the Wild Atlantic Way and stopping at the Cliffs of Moher and The Burren.
The Cliffs of Moher are obviously gorgeous, and I do think that you should stop here, but I will tell you that it wasn't a highlight of my trip. Maybe because it is so well attended, it didn't feel as private and magical as other places we stumbled upon? Maybe because the entire time we were there it was lightly sprinkling and Jorge was making me dry the camera lens with a special little cloth? I'm not sure, but either way, I think you should do it but I bet you will find secret spots that hit your heart a little harder.
Apparently you used to be able to walk right up to the edge of the cliffs, but one too many people were doing that on purpose, so now there's a protective railing.
After the Cliffs we stopped at Burren National Park which is an otherwordly landscape, composed of stretches of limestone, rock formations and ancient structures. There are several hikes you can do here, and you could easily spend a day or two at this National Park. I think the distance you're planning on driving today will determine how long you spend here.
I should mention that this route skips many popular destinations, such as Dingle. You simply can't do everything, but if you wanted to add days onto your itinerary, I would add them here on the Cliff Coast.
When we finally arrived in Galway, it was more industrial and certainly larger than the last couple of villages we had stayed in. It's a bustling city with a lively Latin Quarter, lots of shops and restaurants and no Murphy's ice cream, but excellent gelato. It's also where the claddagh ring was first designed, so if this is something that interests you, I would make a point to buy it here.
If you are someone that really enjoys a nice, cosmopolitan dinner and thrives on the energy of a city, then I would stay here, otherwise, find yourself a cute B&B somewhere between Clare and Connemara, since that is where we are spending Day 8.
