One Perfect Week in Ireland...Day 2
The great thing about day 2 in Ireland is you will start with a bomb ass breakfast. This won't be as amazing the fifth day in a row, so appreciate the novelty now.
After breakfast, take a short drive to Kilmainham Gaol. I would strongly recommend that you prebook a tour ticket ahead of time. If you book online, just select Heritage Card price. If you didn't buy a Heritage Card the day before, you can do so here.
Kilmainham Gaol is a former prison that is now used as a museum. Several famous Irish revolutionaries were imprisoned there. The tour and the facility is sobering and gives you more insight into some of the politics and background of Ireland. We probably spent close to two hours here. The tour was fantastic - you can really tell that the history is very much alive and still pulls some strong emotions.
I took this picture through the peephole of the cell and I straight up felt like Ansel Adams taking some mindblowing angles.
After the Kilmainham Gaol tour, we went to the Jameson Distillery and did a whiskey tour. This was fine, and maybe if the weather is awful this is what you should do too.
Truth in lending: here is where I'm going to suggest something that I haven't actually done, but sounds like a better idea.
I've heard glowing recommendations for Howth, so I think you should go there after the jail tour. Howth was originally a small fishing village that has grown into a suburb of Dublin, with shops, restaurants and a 6 km long Cliff Path Loop. Walking the loop will burn approximately 400 calories which is, coincidentally, almost the exact amount of calories in a medium sized Murphy's ice cream. You do the math.
Howth is about a 45 minute drive from Kilmainham and then another 45 - 60 minutes back to Dublin, but that's OK because you should probably spend the bulk of your day there since you got such a good overview of Dublin on Day 1.
After spending the day in Howth, make your way back to Dublin and get your second dose of the city center. If you're anything like us this will be more than enough and you will be ready to get out of the city on Day 3.
Need to get caught up on Day 1? Otherwise, follow along to Day 3!
